Crye kneepads pants modification

Hi ASC,

I've just bought two 5.11 pants and LAPolice Gear pants for less that 15$/each shipped, and I was thinking of modding them to add Crye Combat Kneepads:

I've seen the OPS Direct Action Pants but they're fucking expensive (125$ and up) while doing this mod would sum at ~50$/each pant.

Doing the mod makes more sense to me, and would also practice my skills at it since it's been quite a long time since I worked on modifying my own equipement. I still got a quite good sewing machine. Before I start working on this, is there anything I should know, has anyone ever done that kind of mod, or knows somewhere to get tips to help perform it?

Thanks for you help,
Conker

I converted a pair of pants to accept knee pads like that.
Essentially I ended up buying two pairs of pants, one the actual size that I needed and the other one was just for extra material.

If you have not already, get a look at how Crye have their pants set up and go from there.

Do you have pics of the work you've done that could help me start in the good direction? Or just general tips...

I've had a look at pictures, and it's somehow helpful, but I haven't got any on hand, be it genuine or replica. But before going further, I'll wait to receive the pants I intend to mod... they should be here before the end of the week.

I wish I could offer some help. Unfortunately I had very little to do with the physical creation process. I know a tailor whose wife is a seamstress and all I did was show her my crye pants, asked her if it was possible and what she would need. 2 days, 25 dollars and a bottle of wine as a thank you gift later they were done.

Just to revive this thread... yey it's Haloween, isn't it zombie time?

Well, tonight as usual I didn't really had my mind set on studying, so I decided to try my hand at this modification. It's nearly done, and looking good! I documented all my steps, and I'm taking pictures at the same time.

I'll post the full howto quite soon!

I hope that'll help someone.

Sorry for the shitty pics, I didn't have anyone to take them. I forgot to take one before starting everything... But from the store, here's what they looked like:

More details to follow. Show your interest, if no one's interested I won't put that much time in details, lol.

For now, a short legend for the pics
1- The pants before the mod, with the pads. The withey thing is the duck tape "recreation" of the shape for placement on the pants.
2- Placements on both sleeves
3- Cuts on one sleeve
4- Front view of the prefinal pants
5- Side view of the prefinal pants

I still have some details to setup, but most is done. I'll try to get some action, or at least outdoor pics as soon as I can.

Enjoy!

In the blowout section of LAPolice Gear (They came to ~15$ shipped as I ordered a bunch of things, but it still shouldn't be expensive at all )

If you can, relax the stitching around the pads. In other words, reduce the volume of the cavity the pads sit in and bunch up the material a bit. It will look a little looser, but when you bend the knee, the material and stitching won't be strained, and it will last a long time. From your standing pic, it looks like the material is a bit tight.

All the Crye pants I've ever had are done this way, as well as my Skillers work pants and the knees are still good even though the rest of the rest of the pants will be worn out.

I have Direct action pants, they have their own special pockets, you cant fit the the pads for direct action into others.

I modded some tiger stipe pants to take the Tan pads, I now have a perfect John Connor T4 halloween suit, goddamn everything he wore in that movie was custom made, the stuff that wasnt was atleast $350

Sorry but the pants in T4 aren't custom made, they were actually made by OPS :

i know from my own pair that you should really make sure of the corner stitching, make sure nothing will pop and cause everything else to unravel..

otherwise that is a great mod!
