Painting to look like wood

Hey guys, great forum and great community. I am purchasing a Kraken, the clear/green. I checked out a lot of the spray painting tips on youtube, but i want to paint all that is green to wood like, preferably dark shaded wood.. i want to make my AK look beat up and bought second hand.

You would probably save youself a lot of time and money by just buying a wood kit. :|

There are a number of hobby sites which have step by step tutorials on how to 'paint' fake wood. Look up some of the hunting sites too, they have good camoflague guides to paint composite weapons to look like wood.

the best you'll probably achieve is a sunburst effect like on some guitars.
needless to say after a few games it will be scratched to death and horrible, unless you coat it with 50 layers of varnish, which will eventually melt when you touch it with insect-repellent hands...

i painted my Kraken stock and I don't think it looks that bad. I first sanded it with really fine sandpaper. Then hit it with alot of light coats of flat krylon, alternating between a color called "pimento" and a choclate brown.
Once that was done, I wiped on some dark umber stain with a rag and pulled a fake grain onto it. A few coats of gloss varnish to protect, then a light coat of matt varnish to help bring the shine down.
There are some decent directions on the Red Alliance Forums for making the TM plastic wood, look more like wood. If you can get the Kraken Olive color to the approximate color of the TM wood first, you should do ok.

buy a 'flogging brush', they sell em at most hardware store for 5 bucks, if you really want grainy grain, check out 'wood graining tools'

If you really want to paint.
  • Apply a primer (preferably Cover-Stain from Zinsser for better results)
  • Apply a mat base coat of a beige like colour (play with variations that contain some green, pink-ish, red or a strong orangy-yellow effects. This will have an effect which you can find in the differences between red oak and plain oak)
  • Apply an oil based Gel Stain which you'll apply evenly on your surface and rework with an old brush or a textured applicator, be it a wood imitation tool or hard sea sponge. I prefer using Varathane Gel Stain.
  • Apply an oil based Varnish to protect your surface, but mostly your stain which did not penetrate as much as if it was applied on wood. I suggest applying 3 coats of a satin finish and then end by scuffing your finish with steel wool. If you just want to apply a clear finish in aerosol form, be aware that you'll be stuck with the glossy effect. You may also apply a workable adhesive over your stain, however you'll sacrifice durability for looks.

Personally, I'd just buy wood and work it.

Scroll up, they say how to do it.

If he wants a better finish/look then buying a wood kit would be better. It's up to him now.

i agree with the guys saying just to get a wood kit. cuz then not only will it look like wood but it will be wood and what else looks more like wood than wood? or get plastic imitation wood furniture
unless of course you really wanna do it for a sake of having a project to do
