Hi,

I would have 3 questions regarding Steyr Aug:

1) What would be the best version out there (military), stock? I would said TM, but I would appreciate your opinion

2) Would the Phantom kit from King Arm be compatible with the ACTION RAS Set for AUG Series ( Sniper Ver. )?

3) In order to have it as quiet as it, I m thinking about: Sorbo kit, sound proof mechbox (with cork) and silencer with foam. Anything else should be considered?

I have the TM Aug A2 (Civie) version and have loved it. The rail allows you to mount whatever optics you like.

No they are not compatible. If you look closely they both replace the front gasblock area of the upper receiver so you either use 1 or the other.

Concentrate the soundproofing on the body/lower receiver. Most of the noise on the Aug is from the gear box and if you're able to muffle that it'll help greatly. Also, get an extra ejection port cover so both of them are closed off as I found that a lot of noise escapes through there.

I believe the aug offer the most space to insulate the gearbox? ie space between the body and the gearbox itself?

It's a lot more than what you would find on an m4/m16 type body but it's not exactly generous. There's a very old post where someone used expanding foam to fill the gaps but if you do that, you won't be able to get the mechbox out ever again. Taking thin sheets of foam, cutting it down into the right shapes then gluing them to the inside surfaces would work.

I m thinking about sheet of fork or dynamax, this material is 1.7 mm thick (1/16 of an inch). Would it fit to wrap the mechbox?

I'm thinking of just stuffing some bubble wrap in mine as a quick insulating fix. I've yet to try it though.

Out of my phantom, most of the noise comes from my gears and motor now. Im using a slient piston head with a hurricane cylinder head. The hurricane cylinder head has a thick rubber pad over the systema one. Getting one of those modify modular gear set will bring the noise down as well.

Modular set versus Helical gear, what would be the quietest?

BTW, I m getting a sound level meter tool for some expirement, I ll post the result of my experience.

Helical gears should be quieter.

Helicals will always be quieter due to how the gear teeth engage each other.

If you've ever driven a manual transmission car, have you noticed that all of the forward gears are pretty quiet once you're in gear and accelerating? That's cuz they're helical gears. However if you put it into reverse and accelerate you get that whining noise which is actually the reverse gear engaging. The teeth on that are the classic spur style much like standard mechbox gears.

As for foam/sound suppression inside the receiver, you'll just have to try different materials. I was so surprised at the difference the extra ejection port cover made that I never bothered with insulating the mechbox/receiver.

Hopefully Modify will release a modular helical gear set for people that do not want to learn how to shim (like myself)

Has anyone attempted to wrap the aug mechbox in sound reducing material?

Well, if you wrapped the gear box and houseing in tinfoil or something, and then applied low expansion foam to the cavities between the layers, wouldn't you be able to carefully cut open the foam after?
