KA FAL (Carbine)

I've done some searching and aside from a low-qual time-lapse youtube video, I haven't found a "guide" for disassembling a KA FAL, specifically the carbine full stock version if that matters.

I do have the exploded parts diagram but before I "explode" anything, I wanted to ask if anyone has come across a good disassembly guide for this AEG.

Simple objectives of removing the mechbox to check shimming/compression and slight power tune to just under 400fps. Just looking for help on getting the mechbox out without breaking/wrecking anything.

So far no problems with removing the full stock (straight forward) and the grip/motor. I stopped there and reassembled.

Any help or pointers in the right direction on the KA FAL Carbine would be much appreciated!

Thank you,

Tys

You will need:
1x long phillips screw driver magentized (I rubbed mine with a magnet a few times, that did the trick)
1x set metric allen (hex) wrenches
1x set of precision screw drivers

*I assume you have previous experience with a V3 gearbox

Start by removing the stock. There are 2 screws, one on the outside near the receiver and one long screw on the inside of the stock. It helps to have a really long magnetized phillips screw driver for the second one. Disconnect the mini tamiya connector that connects the gearbox to the stocks wiring harness and remove the stock.

Remove the two screws on the motor plate at the bottom of the hand grip, be careful not to lose the motor shim.

TAKE NOTE HOW THE WIRING IS RUN WITHIN THE HAND GRIP

Extract the motor electrical contacts with a flat head screw driver so to not damage them and extract the motor.

Remove the two screws that hold the pistol grip in place.

Next remove the selector switch. Rotate the selector to the single fire position to allow the trigger to move. This will help in the disassembly. The plastic cover that conceals the screw can be removed with a small flat head screw driver. Remove the small screw and the select switch.

Next remove the lower reciever. There is an allen (hex) screw at the back of the receiver where the stock used to be. Once it has been removed the lower receiver will pop off. You will need to work the wiring and the trigger to get it off. (Remember to set the selector in single, this well help alot) The selector gears will fall off, be careful not to lost them, there is the 2 plus a plastic part that is loose inside.

Next you have to remove the return spring. If it hasn't popped out already, pull back on the charging handle, it will likely fly out so be ready. Then remove the bolt and the receiver cover, it should be easy.

At the back of the upper receiver is a block of metal with 4 screws, remove the screws to loosen the gearbox.

TAKE NOTE OF HOW THE WIRES ARE RUN.

Push the gearbox back and up out of the upper receiver.

If you need to remove the hopup and barrel, there is one of two screws (I forget) holding it in place. Its obvious how to remove it so don't worry.

Re-assembly:

Reinsert the gearbox from the top and back of the upper receiver. Run the wiring harness along the right hand side of the gearbox. There's a slot in the side of the receiver into which the wiring is run.

After you've managed to get the wiring in place confirm that there is enough clearance in the mag well to insert a magazine (it took me a few tries the first time) The hopup chamber should be snug against the shell of the gearbox. This may take you some time but be patient in does fit.

When you're confident with the gearbox position reinsert the metal block and the 4 screws at the back of the gearbox.

Next slide on the bolt and the receiver cover (I always forget this part)
Then reinsert the return spring and guide. The return spring guide should be flush with the back of the receiver. To get it in there you may need to pull the gearbox down to give it enough clearance.

Next reinsert the selector gears. The black plastic piece fits in a hole of the left hand side of the gear box inside of the groove on the selector plate (bright red can't miss it) The gears need to be aligned corrected, match up the lines of the gears to make sure they are set correctly.

Now while holding the gears in place, rotate the gears until the trigger isn't locked, then reattach the lower receiver (this will take a little bit but again once you get the hang of it, it will go easy) and screw in the hex screw at the back of the receiver.

Now reinsert the pistol grip and motor, the selector switch and then the stock and battery.

Adjust the motor height as required.

Thank you DarkAlman! That was very specific and just what I needed.

I ended up tearing into it the weekend after I first posted and ended up doing just what you described here.

LOL, I forgot the dust cover the first re-assembly and didn't get the wiring routed in the body just right the first time as well. And aside from those gears falling off one side after the other... ...everything went together just right.

I was surprised that for all the nice mechbox parts...they used the cheapest of cheap spring guides.

Quick question...from what I gather, it takes a SIG552 (or is it SIG551, or are they the same?) nozzle? Is that true?

Thanks,

Tys

yes it does.

That nozzle caused me alot of grief, I had a 100+ FPS leak due to the stock nozzle.

I swapped it out with a systema SIG552 nozzle and it shot up from 265 to 410!

You'll need to swap out the tappet plate too, the KA stock plate isn't quite compatible with MARUI parts. It will cause the nozzle to angle and not seal correctly.

Thank you again. The nozzle is the leakiest part of the compression system on mine, but it wasn't horrible (yet...I had only put 2 mags through it before I tore it down to bump the FPS).

I had nozzles for 6 other types of rifles...but not a 552 to be found. I'll swap both the nozzle and the tappet when I break it down again next month.

Another question: Will a real steel rear sight fit the dovetail of the KA? The somewhat stupid rear sight just slides horizontally back and forwards...doesn't the real one slide up a ramp (from back to front), in effect raising the rear sight?

Sorry haven't tried that yet. I've actually removed mine entirely so I can use the KA railed receiver cover for my scope.
I actually wanted the L2A2 trillux scope (I found some on ebay) but it uses a custom rail that is WELDED TO THE RECIEVER COVER. Since I can't legally own it I gave up on the idea.

My stock sight has actually been drilled out. I used a small drill bit to widen the aperture of the site to make it easier to see.

With PB goggles (JT Flex 7, with mask removed)...sighting is horrible. I couldn't get down low enough on the rifle to use the rear sight (which has an incredibly tiny hole!). I ended up using a good cheek weld and just the front sight. It was close enough to get short bursts on target.

I ordered a KA FAL dustcover rail unit, it should be here in a week or so. I'll cave and put a RDS on it. Shame though, I wanted to preserve the lines of it.

Luckily that unit is easy to install. I put one on my rifle last week.

This is why I use ballistic safety glasses. I used to use goggles but they kept getting in the way. I hated them soo much that I switched to safety glasses even though I would have to do so without prescription lenses. Despite not being able to see past 25 feet I LOVED IT. Because they never got in the way.

Since then I invested in a pair of prescription safety glasses.

Well, I e-mailed King Arms and asked them if the "ramped" sight from their new L1A1 would fit the FAL Carbine.

The sales guy has a tech try to swap it and it didn't fit, so the hopes of a proper rear sight die again.

The RIS cover is on it's way...hoping that it makes it sometime next week.

Enjoy that, I still have to pop into my local hunting store to get the right scope rings for mine, lol

Someone ( perhaps you) made a wooden stock for the G1. I am a total Klutz when it comes to DIY projects.
So, I would ask two questions.
1 Was it difficult to produce the stock?
2 Would it be possible to get one made?
3 Would it fit a large 8.4V battery?

okay, that was three questions and I cannot count.
BTW just wanted to say that the KA Fal has replaced my beloved G3A3 as my favourite gun.
Sob, I feel like such a traitor.

The Belgians do make a nice rifle

1: yes, very much so. I have access to a full service wood shop and an expert carpenter with experience working on firearms (ie my dad) and he graciously helped me in this project of mine. It wasn't just a matter of carving a 2x4. So to answer your next question.
2: No, he wouldn't help me make another. I tried.
3: Yes, I have one in there right now.

Cheers on that.
I appreciate the rapid response.

I can build anything I can imagine.

Those who ask why? never accomplsih anything.

What you should ask is why not?
