8mm sniper rifle
Well, it seems Marushin is releasing a Mauser 98 Sporter (gas powered) in 8mm. MSRP for the urethane-finished laminate stock is 60K yen ($560 CDN), with the synthetic stock version at 40K ($374 CDN).
Since we can usually multiply MSRP by 2.5 to get a rough landed cost of the gun, these aren't gonna be cheap. http://www.mojji.com/en/fax/fax.htm

I thought gas was unsafe for sniper velocities because it can be inconsistent?
(different air mass comes by and suddenly you are punching holes in plywood) |

I doubt its THAT different... but you won't get consistent shots thats for sure.

That's far from the truth.

Ditto, why would there be so many gas sniper rifles then...

Gas sniper rifles are only really "unsafe" in inexperienced hands. One must be exceptionally reponsible and diligent with gas rifles, knowing and adhearing to strict minimum engagement distances, knowing when it's not advisable to use propane (like over +30C) to switch to duster, etc.
I can't see 8mm sniper rifles being too impressive though, at least not over 120ft or so. I had an 8mm Marushin shotty for a bit, the BBs felt lighter than the 6mm ones (just because they were less dense) and I wasn't overly impressed with their performance past 140ft. |

I love my 8mm Shotty, its got not bad range for a CQB based weapon, has a nice punch. Been looking at a 8mm rifle for a while, but waiting for the right one. |

hmmm, weren't the real mausers chambered for rounds close to 8mm in size?
being a gas rifle, the mag should be in the right place, but i've never been impressed with marushin gas guns. their garand was great but others, especially their revolvers were pretty bad in the performance side. we may have to wait for an export model before we see propane compatibility. |

Nah, not drunk, just outlining what I know about airsoft ballistics. Besides, my comment isn't about the shotty sucking 8mm vs 6mm, it's about an 8mm airsoft SNIPER rifle not having the same ballistic co-efficient as a 6mm one, therefore not being very comparable performance-wise. for the similar weights available I can see a larger surface area for lift generated by hop up, but it'll be easier knocked off course by wind.

If the 8mm BB is .50g or little more, it should do fine IMO. But with that weight, different velocity limit should be used.

He is, I have the same 8mm Shotty he's talking about and I get an easy 100ft range out of it, or more some times pending wind conditions. I've turned the hop up nearly all off, as really what the hop up does mostly is just make the BB's spread more; because they are all bunched up and spinning against each other. And the things got good bush penetration. Those 8mm rounds just love to tear through twigs. At a game recently, just emptying the shot gun into a thick area weeded out about 4 guys, that my 360fps AEG wasn't able to knock off.

Well from reading forums overseas and such, the 8mm snipers have been using .27 8mm with no complaints for distance and accuracy starting at 395fps.

The heaviest I could find at WGC are the 0.45g ones, Kip told me they made heavier so I looked because all I knew from what I got with the shotty was 0.34g and 0.45g. Wasn't aware heavier BBs were out there. Still, the density isn't the same, but because of the larger cross section wind would still have a bit more effect on the BBs.
8mm IS pretty cool for shotties and whatnot within 100ft, but I'd have to play around with 8mm sniper rifles to see what I'd prefer. |

8mm are simply less dense than heavier 6mm BBs... It's not hard to work out that 8mm won't perform as well as 6mm at longer ranges, due to air resistance. Someone posted an airsoft ballistics writeup a while ago with hard numbers to prove it, so I'm not just talking out of my ass.
