Radio's, mic's, etc!
Hello you lovely people!
I'm sure this has been covered before however I'd like an opinion on what kind of kits people are using and what is effective. Currently: Cobra Model: PR4700WX (MicroTalk) Mic: Cheapy, shoulder mounted, push button. Just wanted to know what works, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg to purchase. Also compatability is a good thing, refering to the ability to recieve and transmit to other radio's. I.e. Motorola, Cobra, etc. Cheers!

All frs and gmrs radios are compatable, they just have different channel ranges. My old frs was 14 channels with 38 subchannels, but my gmrs has 22 channels with 121 subchannels, plus the old frs had a range of 3.2km, the newer gmrs radios have a range of 27km depending on terrain and such. As for mics, just have to check to see if it'll work for that unit, I had a boom mic headset for my gmrs till I finally got a throat mic which cost more then the two radios.

Well did some further reading and it says licence required for a GMRS.
Now...Honestly...does everyone whom ones a GMRS have a licence? ALSO, throw out some makes and models. Motorola, and Cobra are the obvious. Anything else I should be looking for? Cheers!

You only need a licence if it transmits with more then 2 watts. I have both Cobra and Motorola GMRS radios, and I haven't really found any defference except my Cobras are smaller then my motorola's even though they both have the same range. My motorola's are the SX750 modle and my Cobras are the microtalk, and both can use the throat mic that I have. The reason I have 4 radios in total is we'd use them in my reserve unit when the new radios that we got stopped working which was usually 5 minutes after leaving the base.

As for the adapters, (throat mics, booms, etc)
I'm assuming you have a single pin adapter for the radios? It seems as though the Cobra GMRS that you own is on the same par as mine. The throat mic by chance it's the FireFox is it?

Iasus NT Sniper Pro is the model of throat mic that I have, got it from Stan here on the board
http://www.airsoftcanada.com/showthread.php?t=15538 There are two models of the Cobra microtalks, the dark color one and the silverish grey one, I have the silverish one. Funny thing, the boom mic headset won't work with the Cobra's, only the Motorola, but the throat mic works with both. |

Just to throw out my 2 cents.
I have a throught mike, and its OK, its an OTTO mic, set up with my ICOM radio The mic cost about 600 dollars, and I will re state that the mic is OK. Not great! Throught mic's are a great concept, and they work better for people like myself who have skinny necks, otherwise they suck. I have played with the low end mic sets, and have been very upset with the quality. No one ever understands you! its better to just get a cheap boom, or a 5 dollar hands free set for a cell phone than use one. That said, they are great when you have gas masks, or other breathing apperatus, and are willing to trade sound quality for fresh air.

Motorola Saber 1e UHF
currently w/ Saber compatible speakermic, but once my Bowman repro arrives I'll be running that w/ the Saber. Sabers are fairly popular amoung the milsim crowd in both Toronto and Ottawa. |

Here's my setup:
The headset is an Otto Breeze that Bigmatty found on Ebay for $10. Very lightweight but stays in place incredibly well. The drop cord and wiring are from a $25 Radio Shack headset. The little box in the middle has a PTT, volume knob, 2 VOX or regular setting, and an external audio input, and runs from a single AAA battery. My MP3 player is wired in so I can listen to tunes while I'm killing. It auto attenuates when the radio is receiving. The Icom radio has since been swapped out for an Abel 378 (Kenwood clone). I like this radio a ton, and bought a pair after I tried Batman's from BCAC. The thing is great, programmable through the front panel or by computer interface, and the frequency range it covers is unmatched.

Icom F21GM's, complete with a throat mic setup that works ok but not brilliant. I have 4 of these radios that the team uses. Fully compatible on UHF and FRS/GMRS frequencies.
Can be run at 4, 2 and 1 watt depending on programming. For our rather large grounds have yet to discover any "blacked out" areas that reception is non existant. I love Ibby's setup with the mp3 player and boom mic. What better way to enjoy airsoft than killing while listening to ya favourite tunes. Who do ya listen to Ibby??...Anne Murray??...*wink* |
