Building my own battery set out of AA batteries, opinions?
I know there are some battery experts on this forum so thought I'd get opinions.
I've been able to find a set of battery holders for AA batteries from the local electronics store. These are small and compact, great for building a V-shape battery pack. These packs hold 4xAA batteries each and I'm thinking of wiring two together to make a pack for my modified M4. I realize if I use regular batteries I may burn them out (not made for the high draw) so the thought is to use rechargable Ni-MH batteries from Costco packs. These are rated at 1.2V x 2000mAH each. So 8 of them should give me 9.6Vx2000mAH if I understand this correctly. Total cost ~$35-40 or cheaper on sale. What's everyones opinion? Can I use commercial grade batteries (good ones) to power my AEG? The real reason I just don't use a battery pack instead is I need to fit these all into a Redi-Mag Armalite magazine and it's a great fit. P.S. If anyone is interested in seeing the AA holders just post and I'll put up pics.

The plastic holders will melt. You have to soder the ends together.

In my experience AAs have too much internal resistance to power an AEG.

If you take your readymag to any custom battery shop, they will be able to make you a battery that will fit in it no problem. There is a little place I hit up whenever i'm back out west, called Chrismar Batteries in Edmonton. They do airsoft batteries all the time, and even don't mind bringing aeg's in for those cases where it's a tight fit.
just look in the yellowpages for "batteries" and call around, I'm sure you'll find what you are looking for. |

Or order one from www.unipros.com
You can put a link to a redimag battery pack picture from WGC or something, and they'll make one just like it, probably for a lot cheaper.

Advanced Hobbies (Sheppard & Midland) made my custom P90 battery for me from a sketch. Show them what you want and they'll give you a quote.

hehe.. just as I was gonna ask on the forums you beat me to it..
actually on my M4 I was about to do the same, I bought a M4 recently from some dude and it has a homemade battery pack on it. the leads and everything are soldered on and plastic shrink coated. I think they arn't regular AA's so to speak their like ... actually wait till i ask one of my electric inclined friends before I can tell you for sure. I think its quite possible just need tools like soldering iron and shrink plastic.. |
