Hey guys,
Over the last few weeks I've been using my PWS Diablo as a gearbox learning platform, replacing one part at a time, checking the results, taking it to games, trying to break it (i.e. seeing if my changes hold up to abuse), coming back afterwards and doing a post-mortem, tinkering more, wash, rinse, repeat. I'm trying to record video along the way to document my own learning and experimentation process.
In my last disassembly and reassembly, I replaced the stock G&G gears, 8mm metal bushings and shims with the Modify Smooth Modular gearset (torque) from airsoftparts. It was pretty easy to install. The gear set claims to be pre-shimmed with no play after installation, and after putting it in and installing the motor I confirmed that this seemed to be the case.
The stock shim job had a bit of play to it. From reading various threads here and elsewhere, I've noticed many people saying that imperfect shimming can lead to gear whine (ranging from minor to extreme). I was looking forward to verifying that myself, so I recorded a video before the install and after.
Here is the sound of the gearbox

As you can hear, the Modify pre-shimmed gearset indeed sounds a lot less whiny. I'll add that trigger response seems slightly improved, and in person the gun is a bit quieter now.
(Note: the first video is testing with 0.25g BBs and the second one with 0.20g BBs, the fps and RoF stayed roughly the same between both revisions of the build).
