Tanio Koba Twist Barrel comparison

My balls have finally dropped (figuratively of course), and I will try to do some comparison tests over christmas break. So basically, it'll be testing the effects of velocity on the twist barrel, cup seal vs o-ring, twist vs tightbore, nineball vs firefly, tapered vs stock cylinder head. Hopefully I'll get this done and get some grouping pics, but there's 12 combinations I think, and I'm not sure what my schedule will be (that and I haven't received all my parts yet).

Testbed

Vsr-10

Barrel
Edgi 6.01 435mm vs TK Twist 430mm

Springs
Laylax 110SP and 170SP

Trigger
Zero Trigger

Piston
Laylax PSS10 High Pressure vs Polar Star 90 piston

Spring Guide
Polar Star Stainless Steel Spring Guide

Cylinder Head/Cylinder
PDI Raven Cylinder/Cylinder head

Scope
Bushnell Trophy XLT 3-9x40

Bucking
Nineball vs Firefly

BB
Bioval bbbmax .27g

I guess I might have jumped the gun... I won't be home for another... week, and I don't have anywhere "safe" to be doing accuracy tests on campus :P. At least a few of the tests I can promise will be done, but I'm hoping I can do something conclusive, at least with the results I get.

Keep in mind that with the TK Twist you'll ideally want to be shooting 1 Joule or lower (as tested by Illusion) although I believe it was something like 1.13 Joules where performance degraded too much.

Also are you going to do this indoor? I would suggest if you could find a really long hallway or something that would be ideal as it would virtually eliminate crosswind and make your testing area more of a "lab test" than a "field test".

Question for you, is this also true of TK Twist barrels for Hi Capa 5.1 pistols as well?

Thank you kindly Sir! What kind of range are you getting with it?
That will go on my list... now to get a 5.1! Dear Retailers, I apologize in advance, I will be harassing you...

I have not actually done any testing with it in a while, and it does not get used much in games. I only got the TK-twist and some other parts to get it ready for CAPS down here but then it never started.

Pretty sure i was getting ~70-80 feet before the groupings were over 1 foot and at ~50-55 it was under 5" grouping.

And what do you mean retailers... there is only ONE you should be going to for a hi-capa

Back to OP, I'm curious to see how TK barrels serve it up on a sniper platform, looks like you might end up with a pretty bullet proof setup.

I know that it won't perform that well at 550 fps, but I decided I'd try it anyways. I believe at this velocity, people say it's no better than a 6.08.

The longest distance in my house that is "usable" will be between 30 and 60 ft. I don't want to be punching holes in walls :P.

Another problem has come up, and my mom is a little pissed off at me. She wants me to cancel the order, and I've sent the email, so if it's cancelled, I'll have to do a low velocity test (I won't have the zero trigger to use the 170SP), so I'll be running around 315-330 fps. This also means that I probably won't be able to compare the polar star vs laylax (over christmas break anyways).

I'm also going to use bioval bbbmax .27g bb for the test, and I'll add it to the original post.

I've been trying to run a vsr-10 at 315fps for about a month with a firefly and a twist barrel, but I haven't gotten much time to "tweak" it, since there isn't really any good area in campus. I want to say that the effective range is probably under 150 ft, since the bb will be travelling so slow at that point. Getting hits any distance beyond that will be quite hard, unless the target doesn't move for like 10 seconds :P. I have noticed that at closer ranges, it is very consistent and flies straight. (it's a good thing :P)

Hmmm I might have a solution for ya in terms of targets. This is going to sound ridiculously low tech but hear me out, its worked for me I usually test in my basement too (when I'm back on land and at home) and have about 40 feet max space to zero in my AEG shooting 375 with .25s.
Take any of the smaller boxes, about 1 foot by 1 foot or so, about 4 inches minimum deep. Take the flaps and push them inwards so you get a squarish funnel set up, inside the box, put in either 3 aluminum pans, cut up to match the box size, then some bubble wrap and then something along the lines of filter material from HVAC units. on top of all that take some paper and draw targets on it and tape it over the open end, on all sides. What will happen is that when you shoot your target, the loosely packed material behind the paper will slow the bb down after its hit the paper target that you placed. The aluminum pan parts will prevent the bbs from exiting the back of the box. The paper will prevent the BBs from rolling out after hitting the target as the bbs will pool to the bottom of the box (and since you taped it all the way around, they won't fall out).
I really hope that helps ya. Living with parents can seem like a chore at times but take it from me, a dad, any brownie points that you can add up by being even a little bit responsible in terms of airsoft (no bbs all over the place, etc) will pay off in dividends. Its all about the stigmata of "oh my son is playing with guns" and fighting it with showing people that your guns are the least of their worries.

Oh I totally know what you mean, I wish I had enough outdoor space out of the public eye where I could just sit, relax and zero in my rifle over long ranges, but having enough space is a horrible limitation... I pretty much only do long range setups and tuning (outside of a game) at a farm out near Renfrew (4-5 hours away from Toronto, argh!). 360 Acres of property belonging to a GREAT friend, on top of a mountain, hunter and farmer country, everyones got atleast a 30.06 real steel and no city slickers around to make that "man with gun" call.

Oh, I brought the basement thing up because someone said I should do indoor tests. Outside I think I have between 200-250 ft, but there's a dip, and then it goes over the road into my neighbor's yard :P

I do my "zeroing" in my heater room when it's too dark outside or raining or something.
