I was thinking about making something like this, except instead of using gps, I was planning to get positions using some static transmitting points on the ground, and do a satellite overlay to find positions on the map. The original plan was to use a wireless network and ping each node, but I'm thinking right now that this wouldn't really work because the wireless cards don't really know which direction the signal is coming from, just maybe the distance.

Cool, but most people can't follow simple orders.
In order to use this, you need a good bunch of organised and coherant teams.

I think we are working toward being able to use this in a near futur with the airsoft bootcamps, trainings by real soldiers and the general milsim mentality. But we are not quite there yet.

you don't have to know the direction. Only the position of the fixed tower and time. Triangulation work with 3 towers minimum.

it's also not accurate to within 50 metres. It's showing my location (iphone) as in a church down the block from me...

EDIT: I'm also on Radio 1, no security.

I have not added this to my iphone just heard about it on the podcast and looked at it on the website, but I guess you can add players to your army and be able to see there locations and send commands and what not back and forth

I am in process of marking locations on the gps to match the maps I made of the field. Its a hybrid but hopefully will work for obejectives. Both maps will use different loactions with different titiles to avoid confusion. I think this will be helpful. I also agree with Fox you need folks who can be organnized and CAN READ a gps system corretly.

If it work on BlackBerry, I'd try it.

I got a GPS function on the phone, but I wonder how it will work in erea where there is no cellphone towers receptions. The GPS feature won't work, since it's not a real GPS.

I wanted to try to find the relative positions of the guys to each other, and find an absolute position with the static point. So if you had 4 guys pinging eachother, and all you have is travel time (the signal) along with the static point, theoretically, you should be able to find their absolute positions... right?

It's been 4 years since geometry, so for some reason I was thinking in trig rather than intersecting circles :P.

I was following our car on my sister's blackberry using google maps, and I think the error was like up to a quarter mile, which would basically be useless trying to find your guys..

When it goes "public":
A: This is a Beta test, free of charge. We plan to keep the base service free even after the Beta and to offer special things for USD 5-10/Month.

Here's the product site
http://battletac.com/web/guest
In Action
YouTube - Modern Warfare 2009 - Airsoft event Császár, Hungary
Docs
http://battletac.com/web/guest/documentation

Its supported on Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile and Java (Win/Mac/*Nix)
Layar is the feature (companion software) most will want
http://layar.com (free Augmented reality Browser)
It might be possible to build a "lite" version in Layar itself (there's a PHP backend for it)

any halfway decent consumer grade GPS is usually accurate to under 10m (address data, not so much) as long as the tree cover isn't too heavy.
