i guess I could have done that, I had just assumed that I would get those people in this thread, as I'd expect those who dont use them dont know all that much about them.

Are you sure you want to limit your list to that three? From what I have heard and experienced, none of them are good sniper rifle platform...
Considering the cost of upgrading, the price difference of a "good" sniper base gun (such as Tokyo Marui VSR-10, Classic Army M24, or Maruzen APS2) and a "cheap" base gun is not that significant, but they do make a difference on performance, even after upgrading...

Going with a TM or maruzen will save you money in the long run. They are solid, reliable and need far less upgrades then a cheap clone like the ones you are considering. Heck, I've seen a stock TM vsr out shooting upgraded clones.
And the reason this thread has derailed into a "Don't get a sniper rifle as your first gun" thread is because we see threads like this weekly from L33T newb owning tacticool COD players who think they'll own the field with a clone sniper. (yes, I left the rifle part out on purpose) Then a week later you see their "L33T newb owning rifles" in the classifieds because they got owned so many times in a game that they usually leave bitching and crying. Look at the join date of most of the guys telling you not to get a sniper rifle...We've been around the block a few times... |

Following your reply I was looking at the Maruzen APS Type 96 Spring Rifle.
It seems really nice the only thing that concerns me is the fps. I realize having 500 fps isint always good but how would the maruzen perform with a fps rating of 280-300fps compared to the 450-480 fps of the ASG AW .308 ? Accuracy? Effective range ? Also the scope I have already purchased is a 3.5-10x50E mildot dual illumination red/green. The price isint too far off from the ASG. so may be an option. What upgrades will I need for the maruzen right off the bat to make it playable? If it is not already out of the box. Maybe just a spring upgrade to bump the fps a bit ? Also are there local shops that carry or import the maruzen ? And are there readily available upgrades for it ? Thanks in advance. Last edited by Proliphic; March 6th, 2013 at 14:01.. You have to understand that japan has inverted FPS laws compared to Canada. They can't play with high FPS. Knowing that, These guns, out of the box, are made to perform well in that fps range.
Search a little, there's a whole lot of threads around here on "What upgrades should I buy?" I will say it again, play with an AEG before jumping on the L33T sniper band wagon. Just borrow or rent one at first, see how a game runs and what the dynamics are, before potentially flushing money down the drain. Theory and field are 2 very different things. Walk before you run or in this case run before you crawl. In real life, operators need to be door kickers before they can train to be a sniper...think about it. |

I get that. But what I'm wondering is will the maruzen with its low fps but higher quality have the same effective range as a higher fps copy ? Or will I need to buy a new spring right away ?
I've done the "door kicking" operator role in paintball. It's not my thing. I know paintball is a whole different game and dynamics but I don't like that style of play so it would be a waste of money for me to gear towards that. But I appreciate the feedback and the direction towards the maruzen. |

For a new player, most organizations won't let you use high fps anyway, so...

Also I was just talking to someone from the asc community that said all black guns that shoot below 366 fps cannot be imported into Canada (maruzen = 280-330 fps) so how or where would one get this rifle ? Cheers |

Hmm. Can u explain how that is ? Would a .30 bb fired at 450fps go further and straighter then the same bb fired at 300 fps ?
Also does anyone have any other information on the <366fps all black not being able to be imported to Canada ? Because if the maruzen type 96 is superior to the ASG AW .308 but un-obtainable in Canada then that will not be a viable option to consider. Thanks |

Sub-366 fps guns are hard to import, so guns from Japanese brands (made to suit the fps regulation in Japan) are not very common in Canada, but there is still some. But, importing such gun yourself is not recommend.

Allright. Let's resume what has been said.
You want a L96 rifle. Get one from a reputable and trusted company, and get it APS2 (system) compatible. Please don't cheap out here, or you'll pay more later (soon). You WILL need to change things on it. The number of upgrades and the longevity of present parts will depends on the quality of the rifle. YES, a low-powered rifle can out-shoot a high-powered rifle. It all comes down to a few things. The most obvious ones are the air seal, the barrel and the hop-up. A poor air seal will lead to inconsistent shot-to-shot capabilities, limiting your capacity to land successful shots. The barrel is important, not by it's length but by it's "straightness". A distorted barrel will deviate the BB and cause erratic shots. The longer the barrel, the better the FPS and a precision gain, but after a certain length it doesn't matter. The most important part is the hop-up. That's the part that will counter the effects of the gravity by "pulling up" the BB. You can have the best rifle in the world, add 4.000$ of upgrades, but with a poor hop-up, it'll shoot like crap. That is why brands like Tokyo Marui are praised. Because their hop-up system are working well. That's why a high powered, cheap rifle will shoot like ass. And for the love of god, please don't buy the C-TAC one, or anything Buy... a certain retailer sells. I might edit that post later if I forgot something. |

Thank you for the info. I have tried to find a local shop that can get the maruzen type 96. But I have not been able to. All info I have found is from around '05-'08. If anyone knows where I can get this rifle I'd appreciate it. I prefer local pickup if possible. Also I'm not quite sure what u meant in the last statement u made that is bolded. Edit: never mind I just figured out what You were trying to say. LoL |
