Well, it really depends on what you want. I personally love pistols, so I have a few. The fact that I don't use them much when playing outside is moot because I'm happy to just stare at them. ;)

Even in playing woodland or a kinda "MOUT" field, I tend to use my pistol a lot, just for the simple fact that I love them. If I can find an excuse to use my pistol, you can bet it's already up and ready.

I use my 4.3 alot because i can trust it to hit something 200ft or less within a few shots.
Also run primary sniper but its good if your really humping a tree and you need to do tight leans when an enemy has a bead on you

Any time the target is within 50 feet, switch to semi fire. Within 30 feet, switch to side arm. Should be common Airsoft etiquette, but unfortunately its not.

Well it depends, my primary shoots at 350 and so is my pistol, no unetiquette behavior in that situation.

And for the main question, I almost never use my pistol, except when I have really nice situations to use it or no more ammo for my primary.

If I played outdoor more, depends if that $400 will get me a better primary. If not, I'd just use it for gear or upgrades.
Priority is upgrade primary, then get a pistol.
I had a pistol for a long time, didn't use it much, maybe got 6 kills a year with it.
Sold it, ran without a pistol for 2 years, realized I'd rather get those 6 kills a year than run out of ammo and get fucked.
Bought new pistol, got like 6 kills a month with it, then bought a marui M&P, now Ben and I will play marksman with the pistol at the warpaint field and see who can get more kills from the bus.
Now that I have a really good sidearm, it doesn't just save MY ass, it saves other peoples asses lol

A properly tuned pistol is deadly. They won't have the brush cutting power, but they are small and unassuming, often more quiet than a primary. They keep your profile small and when getting close to an opponent can be easier to wield in tight spaces. Also, they are useful as an "oh shit" weapon due to ammo loss, battery loss, malfunctioning primary, etc. If people don't appreciate their sidearms it's because they aren't taking them as seriously as their primary. They bought one because it was their favourite pistol, for cool factor, or some other train wreck mentality mistake. Hop-up, ammo, holster, etc, should all be considered to give you an edge. Either that, or you're just spending $300 - $500 on a thing.

I ended up selling off mine. Played mostly 24hr Mil Sims. After so many hours of carrying it, it just becomes cumbersome. Not just the pistol, but the extra gear needed for the pistol as well. If I played more CQB games, I may carry a pistol. Then again, it's always easier and cheaper to just get more mags for your primary, if you're worried about running out of ammo.

I play CQB basically all of the time, and I transition to my pistol a lot. That being said, my primary since last year was a KWA MP7 and I only have two magazines, so I tend to run dry on that a lot.
