It's not as bad as you think. I had my hands on the PS24 model the other day and it was no where near as bad as you think 7 frames would be. I was scanning out of a fast moving car and it worked very well.

The real gripe about that unit is the damn eye relief. It's terrible. You can't get it close enough while wearing eye pro.

nothing. anything placed in front will block the unit from seeing anything.

I don't know if you are Trolling as I believe Germanium (Ge), Silicon (Si), or Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) lenses are ideal for transmitting the Infrared IR spectrum but they only work in for non-FLIR technologies or different wave lengths.. IE for inspecting food/containers, anti-counterfeitting measures.

Nope, why would I be trolling? It's the same material as the focus lens. They are available for some FLIR models, but they go for about $350-$500.

It isn't aspherical, it's just flat. But a zero-meniscus lens with a curved surface would hold up better to BBs :P

Some polymers transparent to far-IR work as well.

Thanks for the info. But you would obviously want to pair your sacrifical lens with something that is at least equal IR optical clarity as your Themal unit, or you sacrifice sensitivity and image distoration.

That's what Q is saying. Germanium is the same material as the focal lens of the unit.

Honeycomb is a smart idea. I've seen them take a few hits and save optics. Plus no kind of shrapnel could hurt the actual lens on the unit.
Does the honeycomb distort the image at all?

I'm very curious if anyone's used an ARD of any kind with a thermal unit?

The lenses are pretty damn tough (and warrantied if you have a FLIR unit) but I know I'd still like an extra layer of protection. I actually called and spoke to FLIR about this, and they said they weren't sure how the system would react with honeycomb in front of it.

Because its running off of heat, you could get some issues if your ARD was significantly hotter or cooler than the environment.
