Playing with tracers

I have been thinking about getting a tracer unit but at a recent 24 hr game I found that they're really ineffective if someone is attacking a fixed position.

We were taking fire but I wasn't able to get a bearing until the guy with the tracer unit started up and then we had them. Followed the BB's back home and Bob's your uncle. I think he was on a full tracer load though.

i found the madbull hutu to not be very bright. i guess that would be due to the use of white leds instead of UV, and also the leds are placed below the nozzle. ideally you want the LEDs shining right between the nozzle and the opening to the hopup. the tracer BBs love the higher wave lengths. if i could get a UV laser to fit, i think that would be the shit.

humm.. there are UV strobe flash bulbs, if only BBB would pop those into their tracer units.

oh I know what you were asking... I was curious to see what people can get their hopups to shoot accurately to beyond 60m :P

roughly, maybe a bit less than that...nothing amazing, it's still airsoft.

lol, until recently, I've ever only been to games where i ran with one, max two others that had a tracer unit. The rest of the team always ran dark. So being near or on point, everyone knew where to shoot.

Last night game I ran all tracers with renegade and although they knew our general location, not once did a BB land within 20 feet of either of us. Wasn't until I lit them up with a spot light that I got hit. My fault for not taking better cover but it showed us they were well bunkered and not attempting to flank.

I always wonder about that disconnect. People want the most realistic looking gun possible; its got to be all metal and have trades etc. but if it has any kind of signature like it's real brother would have they shy away.

Although I find tracer units to be interesting, and to add a almost "realistic" edge to the sport; they don't really work unless everyone runs them. I've seen a few at milsims, and all it does is give away the operators position. The great thing about the dark, is that no one knows where you are. Unless of course they run NVGs with IR, or thermal.

As far as hits being called in the dark, I don't often see a problem. It's usually quieter at night, and people only shoot at sound or movement. So a gear hit is very audible in the dark. In fact, you can hear someones gear hit from far away. Also, when people get shot and don't know where it came from, they tend to call their hits. Or suffer spray from the darkness aimed at their northern region.

I'd love to run a game where they were mandatory. But I'd for sure not be the only one running one at a game. White BBs are easy enough to see in almost any ambient light anyways. It's not like you can't trace your shots. In the dark though, you can only see the BBs for one hundred feet or less I find.

It's all just part of the progression of play.

If you have a local group that's solid and runs radios, and PTWs, and NODs etc. then expecting those guys to turn up at a dedicated night scrim with tracer units is not over the top.

If the local group rents and borrows guns and shows up in scruffy white runners and jeans then expecting them to bring along tracer units is a faint hope.

While I do somewhat tailor what I carry to the local norm I don't leave my gas gun at home if everyone else is running AEGs and high caps. And If I'm the only guy at a night game with a tracer unit I tailor my play to suit. Since it's usually on a gas gun with a mix of glow and plain BBs I can shoot and scoot and be the guy on the team who draws fire while the rest of the folks flank.

Pretty much the same as Airsoft, except you have to maintain an erection...
