Downvolting batteries... possible?

Couldn't find a thread on this. I'm obviously a newbie, but that's why I'm here. :-D

Would it be possible to downvolt say a 9.6V to an 8.4 by slicing off a cell and rewiring the connection? I've read around and gotten mixed messages. Thanks in advance.

Could be difficult if the cell you want to remove is directly soldered to another cell though. Some cells will be soldered directly from positive to negative terminal with no wire, battery bar, or other external conductor. You can't get a soldering iron into the joint and ripping the cells apart will probably damage the terminals.

Most cells are made with thin peices of flat metal spot welded to the battery. It's simple enough to separate the cells, use strong needlenosed pliers to grab the metal, twist and it'll tear off. Then you just need to use a very hot soldering iron and a lot of solder to reconnect the wire. Once you've done a few, it's dirt easy.

If you don't have any experience soldering cells themselves, or the equipment necessary, you can very easily damage your battery irreparably.
