A friend of mine is a CBSA Agent..

he freely admits that they generally don't have a clue what they are doing.

The volume of legislation and regulation regarding import would fill a large room.

they fall back on Judgment and assessment. and let the specialists sort it out.

I should make a business out of importing and selling gearboxes. I've ordered one that came through Vancouver, it took a little while but it got through. Mind you, that could have been either my KX3 or the gearbox, as I've already had a few people call it a "silencer".

Very true, and in this particular case it would be sort out pretty quickly for Conker.

You should run into their office with a mechbox and threaten to compress air at them.

...then when they're looking at you oddly, mention that you're only acting retarded and didn't know what her excuse for it was.

Yeah, pretty much. Some things you have a really good intricate knowledge of, some things you know you have no clue on and have to consult reference materials...there is no way in hell one "Inspector" could know ALL of the legislation involved by heart. And CYA is always safer than going out on a limb, right?

This has happened to me many many times especially because I am a gear and accessories whore...I don't know which was worse having a gearbox seized at post or physically at the border.

Other then the fact that guns and receivers and what not are prohibited and national security and such...Do border gaurds here in Canada (the cbsa) receive military/police
weapons training? if so to what extent?

It would seem, anyone who has worked with AR platforms or any other weapons platforms should know the inner workings of these weapons.

Nope they get the "if it looks like a gun stop it" training and that's it

Just talked to her supervisor. She told me she was gonna get the information and the part to make sure she knows what she's talking about and will call me back today.
She was very friendly and seemed professional, so I have some hope...

Hope everythings will go smooth for you Conker! With a bit of luck you were speaking to the right person!

I've heard through the grapevine they're looking to hire people that have their PAL now (not sure if this is only for, or doesn't apply to summer students in the FSWEP program but the context was talking about the FSWEP and student hiring in the summer). But even then if they had a PAL they would probably seize it to be safe rather than sorry.

They've started arming the CBSA... so it's a good idea that they higher people that know WTF they're doing around guns.

i've had this.. a gearbox caused one of my packages from the UK (to cyprus) to be 'downgraded' ( gun =/= fly ) and it took 4 (or 5) weeks for it to get to me..

Ah, and there was the time that my tactical flashlight (RICO brand, attaches to rails and has it's own grip) caused a large package to be returned to the UK and handed back to my parents because (and i quote) 'the packages has guns in it'

people doing these jobs are rarely 'gun-nuts' and so they won't get the nuances of the job (even if it's in black-and-white, they won't care because they learn VERY quickly to follow everyones leed to avoid 'accidents' that cost them a job)
