Paintball is actually a lot more expensive than airsoft, it's the addiction that kills. I mean look at their "good" gear.

A descent Speedball marker is upwards of 1000$
Combined with boxes of paintballs. estimate 100-150$ per 2000
And they use much more than 2000 in a day. It's just that airsofters tend to buy many different kits, camo's, guns, accessories than paintballers, who stick with one marker, and just buy paint.

I completely lost interest in paintball when I realized how often an asshole would run up and hit you from 5 inches away with a 300fps gun...
So why is a fiberglass pipe with some holes a lot more expensive than a ABS pipe with some rifling?

A PTW airsoft gun which markets for 2500$ is going to be more expensive than a high end paintball gun. I don't know where you buy paintballs, but at every local store that I've ever bought paintballs from, the price is in the range of 50-60$ for a case of 2000. All the paintballers I know had multiple markers and "camo", although it all was puked colored. More gear is required to play airsoft than paintball, which explains why it costs so much. A paintballer buys the gun, and the paintballs, and a vest to put it all in. Maybe some 5$ pods. A decent chest rig/vest, with enough pouches to put all the mags which carry the bbs, as well as a dump pouch, and various other pouches including radio, grenade and utility pouches will put you in the hole a few hundred bucks. Hell mags alone will run you 80-90$/ 5 units. Due to the complexity of an airsoft gun, they have a higher chance of breaking, which requires more money to fix than a paintball gun. the parts for airsoft are much more expensive than those of paintball. Hell, in camo and vest alone you're talking 600$ bucks total, and thats a conservative amount, considering the cost of camo BDU's. And thats just to be "operational", let alone fully prepared.

Paintball costs more? Yeah, sure.

Airsoft has a higher startup cost, but once you have the vest, mags, BDU's, and gun, the ammo costs alone make airsoft much cheaper.

You can get started in airsoft nowadays for under $1,000, including vest, BDU's, mags, and an additional battery or two.

My friends that I use to paintball with get cases of paint (2000 rds) for about $30 each. They also just found an outdoor field that offers a Bring Your Own Paint day. I've spent about $500- 600 on paintball gear but refuse to wear BDU's out there. An oversized hockey jersey catches paint really well and helps prevent breakage.

GOOD paintballs (the ones that give you near airsoft like preformance is the $100 for 2000... though you have to be dumb as hell to waste your money on that. And Hi-end paintball guns running $1000 + the extra $1000-$2000 to make it blinged for tournaments. ends up just as good compared to other guns as an upgraded jg compares to other airsoft.

Since the International Olympic Committee vote to recognize paintball (speedball) as a SPORT missed by only one single vote. I think you'll see paintball in the Olympics before airsoft. ESPN also shows the tournaments on TV, when have you seen airsoft on TV? Those would be compelling reasons, and my last pro season I made over $4000 dollars in prize money, you ever get paid for airsofting? The games are completely different, don't flame what you don't understand. Airsoft is way cheaper in my opinion and better game to play just for fun. Paintball is more about the compitition.

Well then. We strive for simulation, usually, rather than competition. I've played paintball many times before, and it is far less fun, intense, and competitive than airsoft. Paintball is just run 'n gun, bang bang bang the drum shooting up. No rhyme or reason (obviously you'll claim there to be, but the tactics are simple). Airsoft is often about using real strategy and planning out attacks and defences of large scale, large playing area matches.

And it is much more expensive of a hobby (not including ammunition). Airsoft gear, if you want a real, quality, accurate loadout, is way more expensive than red, blue, and yellow anodized guns that look like they're from space, and wearing brightly coloured clothes to blend in with the brightly coloured inflatable "cover".

Paintball is just more recognized because its been around for longer and is more acceptable to the public since the guns don't look real and the people dress in what look like team uniforms.
Airsoft is less acceptable because we look real, and scary to most people.

Actually there are replica paintball guns out now that are pretty realistic, realistic enough that the airsoft community should be pevved, they aren't clear and without the hopper on it pretty convincing. I don't necessarily disagree with you, I mean I have converted. This is the less expensive hobby, for large field play and woods play, airsoft is the way to go. But for shear aggression, face to face , point blank range , run and gun , 5 min time limit, paintball (speedball on a concept field) is pure adrenaline rush.

What most of you don't understand is there are two basic forms of paintball. Speedball in which fields are regulation size and use inflatable obstacles that are the same on each and woods ball less organized and usually played in the woods or indoor facilitys that look like ye olde western towns and the like. Speedball is highly competative and the bright coloured jerseys they were are much the same as what sports teams wear. They are breathable and allow you to acheive a good slide on the field. Woodsball is usually less competative. There has been a trend in the last few years to have bolt on kits on your marker to make them look more like rs. Milsimers wear BDU'sand carry just about the same equipment as airsofters. Now usually the people who pay $100 plus dollars for paint play at least semi-pro and are sponsored by manufactures.

Now obviously airsoft guns look more realistic as they are replicas, but lets admit it guys and gals its pretty hard to get friends to shell out hundreds of dollars to guy an AEG while I could easily convinve most of my friends to play paintball a few times a year.

Yeah, I suppose to each his own. Paintball just wasn't as exciting for me. There wasn't any rhyme or reason to it, it was just running and gunning. A bit of an adrenaline rush but not much.
Figuring out how you're going to move to a better position while being pinned down by fire from an unknown target is way more of a rush.

If you go to countries that support airsoft, you'll find competition games everywhere.

Not really, not nearly to the same extent as paintball. It doesn't matter, though. Paintball is welcome to being more "competitive", with prizes and awards. We don't need that.
