AI Tornado Grenade Trouble
So I got my first grenade, and was quite happy. I followed all the instructions to a T. Then my first throw (with the pin in the 3 second hole) I gave it her virgin toss. It was perfect. Detonated in mid air just before hitting the ground. What I didn't notice then was I didn't hold it at all. So I soon realised that the 3 second pin hole is about a .75-1 second delay and the 1.5 second pin is instinaneous detonation. That one scared me. Is thi my fault some how? or did I get a faulty grenade? Help would be awsome! (I got my nade from the ASC store)
*Edit* and before someone asks, no I didn't put lube in the timer delay plug like they tell you not to. Remember, I followed all the instructions perfectly for all of my throws so far. |

Propane right? or did you put co2 in it? and seeing as the timers take 10x as long in the cold, is it really hot there?

The rubber plug is in right? Assuming so or you would have gotten instantaneous detonation with every pull.
What the temp of the room you're in? Average 20deg C? We've been in indoor CQB places where it's so hot that the grenades essentially cook off instantaneously using propane. Add a bit more lube. (you don't need bbs to test this) - with the grenade reset (i.e. push the timer in with the key thingy), base cap off - put 2-3 drops of grenade oil (this is 10wt silicone oil...not the 1-1.5wt GBB oil) on the edge of the shuttle (where the shuttle seals with the body), turn/tilt it around so the oil flows and seeps in around the shuttle. Use the key to push the shuttle in (like it was going to fire) and reset again. Add another drop of oil to the seal and move it around...work the shuttle back and forth a couple of times. It should move nicely and not sticky. If it's moving loosely (i.e. no resistance)...there's an issue. - place pin in 3sec position, make sure the rubber stopper is inserted - put one drop of grenade oil on the fill valve nipple. - invert your gas can (can is upside down so liquid propane is going into grenade) and fill for a good 3-4 seconds. - replace bottom cap securely Pull pin and count...should be a good 3 sec in at normal room temp. Should be even longer since the propane fill you just did made everything cold(er). If it detonates "normally" (2-5 sec)...it's good...keep it lube up. If it goes off right away, try the same test (NO BBs) but keep your thumb over and pressing down on the rubber stopper. If that works your stopper might not be sealing well. If it doesn't, try to get a local guy who's used them to check it out and test it. If that doesn't work...contact AI and talk to one of the guys there. NOTE: You don't even need to put the bottom cap on if you're just testing the timing...all the gas will just go out the bottom, which might be safer so you don't get a facefull of oil gas. |

You also need to give the grenade time for the gas inside it to regulate to room temperature. The timing doesn't function properly if you detonate it soon after filling.

Thanks for the advice all. Unfortunatly, I wasn't clear enough. I followed all instructions to the letter. So yes, I've done all that. Lotsa lube in the good spots, none inside the cap, cap is on when I try to detonate, gas has had time to adjust temp, etc, etc, etc. I just had the enjoyable sensation of BB's smacking me and my hand after another instintaneous detonation with a BB port facing me. Ouch.
SO I have noticed the whole middile cylindar is loose from the plastic shell? Should this be? I can wiggle it back and forth? And also where the gas pushes the BB's out of the nade, half of one of the holes there is blocked with plastic from the shell. Should that be? Please note, this was all noticed when I got the grenade, this is nothing new from the 5 times I've detonated it (3 in my hand) |

***SEE COMMENT OF NOT NEEDING TO LOAD BBs TO TEST!!!***
ps. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA...sorry It's not unheard of that the main metal body will rotate in the plastic shell. With the pin through either setting (for leverage) you should be able to rotate the shell/body back into position. If the holes aren't lined up...you might get a half-dud release of BBs. Three of my grenades are like that. No big deal. I'd contact AI directly...link them to this thread...and ask for a swap. Or go through your reseller. Sounds like you have a dud. Best of luck, Tys |
