That's one good point, but for many people the objective (no matter what the CO assignments are) is to rack some kills.

Edit: And to add to your sitting there for hours w/o firing a single shot. I have been there done that and captured the CO in the middle of the night in his own tent. Simply by waiting for the sentries to get sick of their guard duty and going to bed. Woke them up and had them fetch their CO for us to capture and bring back to oru base camp.

Those were the days.
