The FAQs are still a good yardstick. Especially based on the anecdote of someone having a feeling they paid "too much" for something.
If someone ordered and received something that's in the no fly zone the chances are just as good that it wasn't checked as if there was a change in policy at CBSA.
Canada has very odd and arbitrary firearms laws and airsoft regulations that in some case mirror those and in other cases they diverge. The rules are left grey deliberately and sometimes that favors someone self importing and sometimes it doesn't.
