That's what I thought. I've had three of my Thompsons do that. It's an easy fix and you may have to repeat it once in a while but once you get it it holds better then it was new. You'll need some cold weld and I used some PVC sheet that I have 10mm thick. It's difficult to explain without pictures.
Oh and you most likely didn't do anything to break it... it's just a very weak spot and will eventually break. My first one broke because I had it slung on my shoulder. Over the years I've learned to keep preasure off the barrel
