They are designed for both eyes open. It shouldn't be a problem tho unless he is right handed and left eye dominant, or vice versa.

Is the lense in a holosight clone anything special? If all it took was a powerful led, creating a cutout screen for the led(custom reticle would be great) and a lense a custom optic would be awesome and possibly cheaper.

Reflex sites are parallax corrected to a specific distance.
I believe most clones are reflex sites, not holosights.
