A designated marksman and a sniper are two different roles.
Snipers operate in teams separate from the rest of the company, and provide forward recon, gather intelligence, direct artillery and airstrikes, and sometimes engage in direct, long-range combat.
Designated marksmen provide a longer-range precision element to an infantry unit.
