And when you accidentally cause the positive lead to connect to the negative lead you have what you just describe above: an unintended circuit where there is no load between the two poles and the current has nothing to resist it and the battery will melt. As an double E I am well aware of people miss-using the term but no need to jump someone else who said sentential the same thing but with different words. Reminds me of the sign on the copy machine in the electronics lab back at school that said “caution 10,000 Ohmsâ€
