Also depends on the type of suppressor used. Mine is custom designed with an internal barrel, perforated for the last half of it, and has baffles. But I installed foam into a buddy's suppressor, and got almost the same result (just without the velocity increase).
The bolt is internal, only the side is exposed through the ejection port. But the nature of it, bolt slides forward, hits the gas relesase valve, most of the gas goes down the barrel and it doesn't take much to make the bolt return to the open position.
