I have done the same thing with abseil gear.

If i get more than 2 shots direct to the lens it is then retired. Thats why I bring an extra set to a game. Even if its a place where PB goggles are not needed they are still with me for the "what if" factor.
Yes changing the lens every 6-12mo is recommended also along with proper care and cleaning.
