I tried assigning new comers as medics, I found 80% of the time they don't respond to MEDIC as they are too timid to run up.

The one thing I did find that new comers are good at is flanking. I usually run up to draw the fire and get all the attention by yelling snide remarks at the enemy (friends) and YELL FLANK FLANK FLANK to the newcomers. And if I am lucky usually have a 50/50 chance my new player friend can do it

I agree dragging works too! I was dragged around in my first game and I figured things out a little faster that way. Probably because I was under fire and running for cover
